People usually fail to detect the problem early as most of them do not check on their residential water meter on a regular basis. The first sign of probable high water usage appears on the monthly Water Billing when there is surge in cost. You may be wasting water due to plumbing problems, leaks or inaccurate water meter reading.

Take steps to prevent this from happening:
1) Regularly check the water meter once every few days. Make it a habit. If the water meter is moving while no water is being used, close the stop valve and open only when it is to be used. Detect and fix the leak immediately.
2) Replace any damaged plastic pipes, for example, under the sinks.
3) When no water is being used, ensure that all taps inside the house are turned off and there are no water drips.
4) If you have an unoccupied house, turn off every tap inside the house, turn off the water meter, remove and keep the stop valve. Do this also for outdoor taps, remove and keep them.
5) Request to check for water meter accuracy if you have performed S
tep 1 to 4 and your water bill remains high. Officers will replace it with a new water meter if necessary.

Every month, our water and sanitation officers checks the water meter within your property area. It is important that you give them access. Do not cover the meter with pots or heavy materials or tie your dog near the location.

This check must be done monthly to ensure your household’s water consumption is reflected accurately in your bill and your water meter is in good condition.

An accurate water reading is to your own advantage.
