Transform Your Yard with Beautiful Trees
The rainy season is coming soon and it’s the perfect time to revamp your garden and immerse yourself in beautifying it. But remember, not all trees are suitable for your yard. You must consider your garden's orientation and soil conditions.
Here are some tips to help you choose the right trees:
- Take note of your yard's size, soil conditions, layout, and function.
- Research your desired tree: maximum height, canopy size, and trunk diameter when fully grown. A young tree might look great, but as it grows, it could become too large and dangerous. A vast canopy will also cast too much shade for other plants to grow.
- Be mindful of tree roots: opt for ones that don't spread quickly. For example, Cambodian trees have a taproot. Banyan trees with creeping roots are unsuitable for home yards. Tree roots can cause damage if planted close to walls – keep them at least 5 meters away.
- Maintenance matters: large trees need regular pruning to maintain their shape, look tidy, and remain safe during heavy rainstorms when branches may fall.
In addition, avoid planting the following trees:
- Dense shrubs that can hide animals or trespassers.
- Trees with creeping roots that can damage properties.
- Those that attract wildlife and potentially bring disease and waste (e.g., durian, guava, mangoes, jamblang, jackfruits). If you already have these fruit plants, harvest before they overripe to avoid attracting wildlife.
- Water-collecting trees like Bromelia and Banana since they store stagnant water and attract mosquitos.
Finally, respect public spaces – only plant on your own land or property, not in developer-owned green areas or public places. Be considerate of your neighbors' yards.
